On May 19, 2026, Vienna once again became the hub of the Austrian betting and gaming industry: representatives from the Ministry, legal experts, and industry professionals gathered to discuss developments, align their perspectives, and gain new insights. Even though the new draft legislation is still pending, the dialogue regarding the potential realignment of the market and the re-awarding of licenses was palpable—with many concrete questions, perspectives, and scenarios.
The main topic was the amendment to the Gambling Act, which is still under consideration. Dr. Andreas Huber moderated the closing panel and discussed with Dr. Monika Racek (CEO of ADMIRAL Casinos & Entertainment AG), Dr. Walter Schwartz (founding partner at SHMP Schwartz Huber-Medek Partner Rechtsanwälte GmbH), and Mag. Thomas Forstner (Secretary General of the OVWG Austrian Association for Betting and Gaming) on the opportunities and implications that a market restructuring—such as the introduction of a licensing system—could bring: economic potential, channeling effects, and player protection were examined from various perspectives and placed in a practical context. As is well known, the legislature threw a wrench in the works for the event “Industry Talk: The Future of the Gaming Market in the New Legal Framework,” which had already been planned for fall 2025. The industry therefore continues to wait until the legislature sets the necessary course, which will enable sufficient planning certainty.
